Why are healthy relationships so essential?

(1) Flourishing personal relationships are the back bone of any society. Research by Dr. Dean Ornish, a cardiologist, tells us that supportive relationships are the #1 factor in our ability to heal from serious disease. Happy marriages provide a sacred haven for adults and children to thrive. First-time marriages have a 50% chance of surviving, while 65% of second marriages fail. We can turn that around!  If you know how to manage conflicts so that you understand each other, you can create solutions that work for both of you. If you are single, dating or engaged, good communication skills help you form a solid foundation to prevent problems from ever mounting up. By the way, you don’t have to be married to enjoy rich rewarding relationships. Emotionally healthy people say that next to their relationship with God, loving relationships are the #1 thing that gives meaning to life.

(2) Flourishing business relationships generate happiness and prosperity when they are rooted in integrity. People prefer to do business with people they know, like and trust. Most buying decisions are made on emotion, not intellect. Companies hire people not only for their technical skills but for their ability to get along with team members. If a company must cut back, they often retain the people with the best relationship skills. If you are interviewing for a job, relationships skills enable you to present yourself confidently and land the job.

We are prone to judge success by the index of our salaries or the size of our automobiles rather than by the quality of our service and relationship to mankind. ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
